The study of religion encompasses a wide variety of academic disciplines, including theology , comparative religion and social scientific studies.  These I esteemed the essentials of every religion; and, being to be found in all the religions we had in our country, I respected them all, tho` with different degrees of respect, as I found them more or less mix`d with other articles, which, without any tendency to inspire, promote or confirm morality, serv`d principally do divide us, and make us unfriendly to one another. This chapter was written for a Dædalus conference on American Religion in May 1966.  But religion, I repeat, is, mainly and chiefly the glorifying God amid the duties and trials of the world; the guiding of our course amid adverse winds and currents of temptation by the star-light of duty and the compass of divine truth, the bearing up manfully, wisely, courageously, for the honor of Christ, our great Leader, in the conflict of life. This course introduces students to Muslim cultures, beliefs, and practices through the lens of journey, migration and quest.  To him all religions are worthy of respect, and their ministers also, for God has chosen for Himself, in every corner of the earth, souls purer than the rest, whom He has separated from the impious world that their mortification and their fervent prayers may suspend His wrath.” He thinks that the surest way to please God is to obey the laws of society, and to do our duty towards men.NEW YORK (April 1, 2016) — Eleven young religion communicators met in person for the first time at the 2016 Religion Communicators Council Convention in New York City March 30. Lord, I do not understand any of those discussions that are carried on without end regarding Thee: I would serve Thee according to Thy will; but each man whom I consult would have me serve Thee according to his.” He insists that religion is intended for man`s happiness; and that, in order to love it and fulfil its behests, it is not necessary to hate and persecute those who are opposed to our beliefs - not necessary even to attempt to convert them.As the population of Europe expanded in the twelfth century, the churches that had been built in the Roman style with round-arched roofs became too small.  That is my religion — to give to every other human being every right that I claim for myself, and I grant to every other human being, not the right — because it is his right — but instead of granting I declare that it is his right, to attack every doctrine that I maintain, to answer every argument that I may urge — in other words, he must have absolute freedom of speech.

The adherents of Epicurean and Stoic philosophy fought long and acrimonious feuds, as one can see by reading Lucretius The reason for this difference between religion and philosophy is that philosophers maintained various factual propositions about the world—that it was made of `breath` or atoms, that it was finite or infinite, and so on—whereas ancient religions only presupposed the existence of forces capable of being persuaded by prayer and sacrifice. He came when, through the power of the new revolutionary idea, the Church had won a position of tremendous power in the decaying Roman Empire; and the subtle worm assumed the guise of no less a person than the Emperor himself , suggesting that he should become a convert to the new faith, so that the Church and he might work together for the greater glory of God.Other religions have risen and decayed; Christ`s comes down the ages in the strength of youth, through the seas of popular commotion, like the Spirit of God on the face of the waters, through the storms of philosophy, like an apocalyptic angel, and through all the wilderness of human thought and action, like the pillar of fire before the camp of the Israelites. While it may be an interesting exercise in cultural exchange to attempt tracing the origins of religion, it does not seem a very worthwhile use of one`s time when it seems fairly clear that the religious impulse is simply a part of the human condition and different cultures in different parts of the world could have come to the same conclusions about the meaning of life independently. This trend continued with the Reformation in 1536, when the Danish church became Evangelical Lutheran and was integrated into the state, as well as in the religious revivals of the 1800s, the energy of which was to a large extent channelled into the cultural, social, and business developments that came to form the foundations of the 20th-Century Danish welfare state.
